NEWS AND RESULTS

We had a great day at Braintree today for the Essex Open U11 XC League.
The boys race was 1.5miles and featured some of the best middle and long distance talent in the county. The course was fast and flat and the weather bitingly cold. Harlow AC's Lewis Harknett set a blistering pace and took an early lead but just lost out in a sprint for the line finishing a fine 2nd place. Twin brother Owen Harknett finished an impressive 5th with Christian Barker in a fantastic 6th place. The Harknett twins are one's to watch for the future!! There was a large field and our Harlow AC's boys team totally dominated the race.
In the girls race over the same distance, the competition was equally fierce and our Harlow team featured strongly with the following excellent results; Millie Ball 14th, Jessica Clive 16th, Lauren Barker 17th, Katie Woodstock 18th, Elise Bailey 19th and Laura Jephcott 28th. All our girls ran brilliantly well with Millie Ball having a fantastic run, proving that hard training pays off in races. Lauren Barker struggled through the race with stomach cramp but bravely completed the race with her team mates.

ATHLETICS: Anne and Richard star at Palace.

IT WAS a great weekend for Harlow’s Paralynipic hopefuls Anne Wafula¬ Strike and Richard Chiassaro at the UKA London Disability Athletics Challenge at Crystal Palace.

Anne Wafula-Strike was delighted to win silver medals in the l00m with a time of 18.5sec and in the 200m where she crossed the line in 33.6sec. Anne said: It was a fantastic weekend. It was the last speed track events of the season and I was really pleased with the way it went. I had a head cold the previous week and my coach Ken Day told me not to do anything but sit and recover. I was panicing a bit but was pleased that I was able to recover and that there was still something left in the tank.
It was the last big event of a good season for Anne. Helped by new coach Ken Day, she won two gold medals, two silvers and three bronze. I am really pleased it’s been a good season,” she said. “It’s been going so well with Ken. He is really motivating and brings the best out of an athlete.
Richard Chiassaro was also celebrating an impressive performance on Sunday. Richard won the 200rn in 26.7sec and was fourth in the l00m in 15.2sec, despite suffering a broken wrist only six weeks ago. He said: “I’m happy with it considering the line up was top class athletes and I’m only just getting over the broken wrist I suffered when my chair flipped over when I was training at Mark Hall. “World record holder Micky Bushall and world champion David Weir finished ahead of me in the l00m by 0.4sec so it was close. I was in the lead up until 70m but the pain in my wrist was killing me and I thought I was going to pass out so had to pull back a bit.
Richard has now set his sights set on the World Championships in New Zealand in January. He said, I have set the times to be selected for the World Championships. They just have to go through the procedures now but I am quite confident I will be in the Great Britain squad. First up though is the Tyne Tunnel 2K race in Newcastle which is the world’s fastest wheelchair race. Richard said, I hit 45mph going down through the tunnel last year! It’s scary and you have got to have trust in your chair. I love it though and it’s definitely my favourite race.

There is prize money as well so I’m hoping to dowel! I’m confident I will finish in the top three.’
Anne and Richard will be training hard throughout the winter on the cycle tracks around Harlow, but Anne wishes locals treated them with more respect. She said, I am so pleased to have such good cycle tracks in Harlow I can train on except when yobs have thrown bottles down and I get a puncture. We have great facilities but people smash glasses on them and it’s dangerous. I have had quite a few punctures and they can’t be repaired which is disappointing. If Harlow people knew how important these cycle tracks were to the whole community they would be sensible and put their bottles in the bin.

Osagie hoping for England OK.

ACE middle-distance runner Andrew Osagie will be keeping his fingers crossed that he is selected for the England Athletics squad for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in India.

The selection for October’s event is due to be announced on Monday morning and the 22-year-old 800m runner from Northfields in Harlow has never competed at the Commonwealth Games before.

Osagie had been ruled out for more than three months with a hip injury and a bone stress fracture in his left foot but has now fully recovered. Since coming back from this injury he has twice clocked under the UK qualifying time (1 mm 47.50 sec) in late July and August for the Commonwealth Games which will take place in Delhi. He clocked 1:47.18 and 1:47.49 in two races at the British Milers Club Gold Standard meeting in Watford, finishing second in the final. Osagie said: “I have done the qualifying time twice. I have shown current form. “As far as getting selected [for the Commonwealth Games] it’s up to them [England Athletics].

He added: “I have done all I can in the time I have been back. There are other racers who have earned the right [to be selected] and have done well all season. In his last race at Parliament Hills Field track in North West London on Saturday, Osagie was handicapped by a slow pacemaker and the wind and rain as he clocked 1:49.0. The pacemaker was slow in this race and I made a move 250 metres out [from the finish] and finished well,” said Osagie.

Osagie is doing all he can to improve without risking further injury. The training is going really well. I am trying to make my legs stronger,” he said.“I’m trying to improve my stamina which I normally work on in the winter. In the summer it is normally just speed work and races but I am managing to combine it. I have had a few injuries but the mistake would be to try and do too much. He added: “I aim to get my time down to 1:45.6 or 1:45.7 [this year] and I’m capable of doing that in the right race. I’m doing in the mid 20s for miles per week and will work towards 35 and 40 miles per week.” Before his injury problems this summer, Osagie was first in the 800m at the McCain City Challenge in Sheffield in February in 1:53.18. He clocked 1:47.40 and 1:51.29 respectively in the heats and semi-final of the 800m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, in March.

In sprint racing you cant afford to lose one metre, so once we get that 20m right, we will be laughing.” Anne’s next event is another Disability Challenge at Crystal Palace on August 15. “I’m really looking forward to that and am hopeful of doing well again. I just love getting out there and competing.”

He said: “I hurt my foot a week before the European trials at Birmingham [in June]. It was a knock-on effect [from the last injury].” Osagie, who has just graduated with a 2:2 Sports Science degree from St Mary’s College in Twickenham, knows he faces a race against time if he is to compete in India. He has never competed at the Commonwealth Games as he was only 18 when the last one was held in Melbourne, Australia, four years ago.
